The Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources, ICFAR, is a part of the Faculty of Engineering, Western University.  It officially opened its doors in October of 2009.  ICFAR develops and brings together top talent from academia, government and industry, to collectively accelerate innovation, driving Canada towards a profitable and sustainable future.  ICFAR is a 20,000 square foot research facility located in the County of Middlesex, just a few minutes north of the City of London, Ontario, Canada. Currently, ICFAR has 5 faculty members from Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, in addition to technical and project staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, visiting faculty and visiting students.

ICFAR is home to two NSERC Industrial Research Chairs.  Franco Berruti holds the NSERC Indutsrial Research Chair in Thermochemcial Conversion of Biomass and Waste to Bioindustrial Resources. Ten partners in addition to Western and NSERC have come together to support this critical area of research.  Cedric Briens is in his second term as the NSERC/Syncrude Industrial Research Chair in Fluid Coking Technologies.
