Institute Administration

Chantal Gloor

Chantal Gloor is the Director, Administration & Operations for ICFAR. Chantal has degree from The University of Western Ontario, in Microbiology and Immunology. After working as a research technician in the former Cancer Research Labs on campus, Chantal was a graduate student and then abandoned a possible career in research for one in administration. She worked for several years in the Department of Human Resources at Western, as a Salary Analyst. She left this job in 1988, relocating to Wisconsin where her husband, Greg, did his postdoctoral studies, and then to Newfoundland where Greg was a faculty member. Chantal took the period from 1988 through to 1992 to be with her two children. In the Fall of 1992, the Gloor family left The Rock and returned to Western where Greg became a faculty member in Biochemistry and Chantal re-assumed the position she left in 1988. In 1995, Chantal accepted the position as Manager, Postgraduate Medical Education with the Faculty of Medicine. In 1996, Chantal continued in this position while also serving as Acting Chief of Faculty Operations for Medicine. A few months later, Chantal was appointed to the position of Chief of Faculty Operations, Faculty of Medicine (later, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry) on a permanent basis. In June 2000, Chantal decided to explore another area of campus. As the Faculty of Engineering Science welcomed a new Dean, Franco Berruti, Chantal was hired to the position of Administrative Officer for this Faculty, later promoted to Director of Administration (Faculty of Engineering). At the end of 2007, Dean Berruti stepped down to undertake a new initiative: establishing Western’s Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) together with collaborator, Professor Cedric Briens. Looking forward to new challenges, Chantal joined the ICFAR team on July 1, 2008.

A significant portion of Chantal’s role includes being the Manager of the $8.7 M Agricultural Biorefinery Innovation Network, funded through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, involving 17 institutions from across Canada. The research of this Network fits within ICFAR’s mandate to be an international leader in the development of socially responsible alternatives to traditional chemical and fuels. As part of the Director team for ICFAR, Chantal’s emphasis is to provide the leadership for smooth, efficient operations, while helping to make the Institute a fiscally successful, sustainable department at The University of Western Ontario.
